Carl's Steak Subs

“I live in the western part of the state and have been wanting to come here for years ever since I saw it featured on Phantom Gourmet. The women at the counter greeted us with a smile, took are order and we had subs on the table within minutes. I got a small steak and cheese which is easily a large anywhere else. The sub was loaded with steak, the roll was soft but sturdy enough to hold the mountain of steak. Definitely lived up to the hype BEST steak sub I've ever had. Can't wait to come back.”

“My husband and I went to dinner here with one of our friends who had been here before. We loved the beautiful decor such as the gorgeous chandelier and blue artwork throughout the restaurant. The food was also good! We got the lobster bisque, scallops, potatoes au gratin, and lobster mashed potatoes. We were celebrating two birthdays and they brought out two complimentary dessert platters that were gorgeous! The bananas flambé dessert was delicious and so cute shaped like a heart. It is definitely an expensive restaurant but it is fun for special occasions.”

“I've been here a few times with friends when we want to go to a little more upscale place. The food has always been perfect. The menu does change from time to time, but is varied enough that you can always find something to your liking. Save room for desert! The staff is top notch. Minor substitutions weren't a problem (mashed instead of fries).”

“The staff was very efficient and friendly. The food was very good except my brownie was a little burnt. I'd recommend the short ribs, seafood stew, cheesecake and brownie sundae. I was hoping to see an apparition but not this time.”

“Black pepper gnocchi was really good, just a tad too salty. But I could tell it was really nicely made, good ingredients and lots of flavour. I would definitely recommend (if they would tone down the saltiness by a bit). The fries were really nice, crispy, salted well, and savoury. The presentation of the food was great, no complaints and the food looked delicious. The service was great too: food came on time, server always checked up on us, even though they didn’t have sparkling lemonade on the menu, they still made it for us when we asked. Dessert was a warm cookie with ice cream and that was delicious, we ate it all before I even got to take a photo. A little bit on the pricier side here, but it’s Cambridge/Boston, so pretty typical. Would I come here again? Food-wise, yes. If I’m paying for the meal, no. It’s expensive.”

Field & Vine

“I've been on a fine dining rampage lately, and when I saw pictures of Field & Vine, it looked promising. As soon as you see the entrance, you can already tell that this is a unique restaurant. The inside is dimly lit, creating an intimate, sophisticated ambiance. The centerpiece is the vines that loop the open bar/kitchen. The plates are tapas, and our server recommended five dishes for two people. - Scallop tostada: The raw scallops were fresh but on the smaller side. The flavors were well balanced, and the crunchy tostada nicely juxtaposed the soft scallops. - Beef tartare: The beef tartare was also fresh, but there wasn't that much for the price. It came with a bowl of house chips, which tasted fine, but the ratio of chips to beef tartare could have been better. - Cheddar scallion cornbread: This is supposedly the crowd favorite. The cornbread was very soft and had a nice flavor, but I don't think it compares to the black sea cornbread from Sarma, which I had eaten recently and is now my standard for cornbread. I liked the miso butter more than the actual cornbread. - Smoked beets: I liked the sweetness of the beets and the crunch of the sunchoke chips. I didn't really taste the almond coffee cream. - Grilled swordfish: This was the main dish and a huge letdown. It was very bland and not worth the price. I would have rather paid for two smaller plates instead. For dessert, we ordered the ice cream sandwich and the lemon verbena panna cotta. I liked both, but the ice cream sandwich was definitely the star of the night. The cocoa nib macaron was crumbly but had a nice bite, and the semifreddo was delicious. I also liked that it came with two, which made it easy to share. Service: This is what made me debate between 3 stars vs. 4. Our server was friendly and frequently checked in on us throughout the night. However, it reached a point where we kept being asked if we were done with our plates, which clearly still had food on them, which made it obvious that we were being rushed. Reservations are booked for 2-hour stays, and we were less than 1.5 hours in at that point and working on our final bites. There were also others around us who had been seated before us and were still eating, but it was too loud to hear if they were getting the same treatment. We were mindful of the time limit and were pacing ourselves accordingly, so it didn't feel great to be rushed like that. Additionally, there is a 20% gratuity that gets automatically added, which didn't sit well because it allows for situations as described above. I always tip, and I don't have any qualms about the kitchen administration fee, as that is becoming the norm, but an automatic gratuity regardless of party size is not common. Overall, Field & Vine didn't meet my expectations, but I do think the interior is special, and I enjoyed the ice cream sandwich so much that I would recommend this place just so others can try that one dish.”

“Margaritas tasting def the ETOH. The one place where the Chrf know how to truly cook butternut squash. Th sirloin tips med rare and succulent. Loaded baked potatoe truly loaded. The one thing I expected was my bread to he warm and it wasn't. That's trivial compared to across the board 5 stars. If you follow me you know I don't "give 5 stars" there earned by true quality food and service. This place is deserving.”

“Nice vibe and ambience! Food options are limited but very delicious. It is more of a couple and romantic restaurant rather than big groups and family. Pretty much no option for kids. The salads are great and fresh and unique in flavor. We tried moules frites and schnitzel. Both very tasty. The broth of moules was thick and flavorful. Cocktails were hit or miss. I tried smoke & haze and it was too bitter for my taste and dominated the flavor. Parking is easy and off street.”

“This place is fantastic, the kind of spot every town wished it had. First time here tried the fried chicken and the broccoli bacon blue cheese crunch, both were excellent! Crunchy, juicy, nicely seasoned chicken and that broccoli crunch was great. About a 90 min drive for me to get there and already thinking about when I'm going back. That should say it all, highly recommend Nan's Kitchen.”

“During the dinner.. It's a bit too dark in side the restaurant. The food is above standard and very tasty, but the flavor is a bit too salty for my taste. The service is excellent, and the location is great. After eating, you can stroll around and shop nearby. It's not a cheap place.”

“We were here 6 years ago while in the area, so we wanted to come back. I'm from the south, so some salt was needed to enhance the flavor on the appetizer. The food was decent (the Buffalo bites on the Mac and cheese were amazing)! The prices were decent.”

“This is just a burger and pizza place. Everything else is like a Bickfords in that most everything is frozen and not fresh. We were a party of four on a Saturday night. The kitchen was very much behind on everything, and our hostess did keep us updated, which was helpful. The salmon and meatloaf steak tips were overly cooked and not edible. The manager comped some of our food, which we thank him for. The deserts would be a 2.5. I gave them a 3 for atmosphere, and it wasn't their fault, but they could have said something to the parents that allowed their kids to run around like it was Chucky Cheese. Why parents can't control their kids makes for a very uncomfortable evening. We prayed that nobody would get hurt as the kids were funny up and down the aisles where people and staff were moving hot food. So, if we ever go there again, it will be just a hamburger or a pizza and drinks. Responding to your reply: When you respond using personal attacks, that certainly tells me about your character. Had you responded professionally, I would have removed my review, and the fact that you mentioned my friend's name on a public forum shows that you sir should never be in a manager's role. That was unprofessional and out of line. My friend thought the wings were okay, but he ordered medium-rare steak tips, which were well done. He is not one to complain, so he didn't say anything to you about it. I did say in my review that you comped us, which was much appreciated, and that our server kept us up to date on what was happening in the kitchen. She was very kind and pleasant too. We gave her a 25% tip from the total amount before you comp'd portions of our meal. My review was about the food and quality (or lack thereof). There are just some things that you need to prepare better. You should take the salmon off your menu. Lastly, I have been in retail management for over 30 years, and I have responded to many good and bad reviews. However, I have never lowered myself to the level that you have by posting such a hateful and damaging response. If one of my managers had responded as you did, I would have either suspended him, written him up, or even fired him. I am sure that the owners of the Brickyard would have had you respond with empathy rather than in an immature and defensive way. Remember that everything that you do is a reflection of the whole business.”

“It started with the drinks. My dirty martini was great. My husband asked for no ice, but it looked like extra ice! The French onion soup was delicious, but very small for the price. The wings weren't cooked all the way through, so we had them drop them again. Better the second time. Onto dinner. My main course was so yummy, stuffed haddock, rice pilaf, mixed veggies. The mixed veggies had baby carrots in it, not my favorite. My husband had the fisherman fried platter, no clams and it looked over cooked. Maybe they were upset we sent sent the wings back. Who knows.”

“When we arrived, it was empty and we were able to place our order right away. However, within 10 minutes they had quite the crowd at the front of the restaurant. Still, there was plenty of seating and I found the decor to be fun. The restaurant and bathroom were clean. My teen daughter and I loved our sandwiches and found that they had the perfect crispy on the outside . They were messy to eat because of how generous they were with the meat. We enjoyed the fries, which had a slight garlic Parm flavor. We did wish that there was salt and pepper at the table. The milk shakes were a great consistency and flavor. They tasted exactly like their names.”

“This place came highly recommended and we weren’t disappointed. We arrived as a jazz band was setting up and ordered our drinks. I had fish and chips with onion rings. We also had the fried pickles and my Wife had a sandwich. By the time the food arrived the band had started to play and they were really good which added to the atmosphere. Service was fast and friendly. Food was great.”

“The food is really delicious. I recommend the fried Brussel sprouts and the spanakopita. Omg the spanakopita. The drinks were very good. I've been here for lunch on weekends twice, there was always a table available, however both times the waiters were constantly rushing us, overpresent, interrupting and handing the check so fast that i felt kicked out. Let people enjoy a meal and talk, please.”
