“In early January I took my older daughter in to have her hair cut and colored and she got severe chemical burns on her face and ears from the bleach the stylist used which will likely leave her with permanent scarring. The stylist applied the bleach haphazardly so the bleach was a good inch+ on my daughter's face and caked on her ears. When my daughter almost immediately complained that her ear was burning, the stylist tried to wipe it off her one ear and then walked away, telling her she'd be back in 20/25 minutes once the bleach had done its job. About 5 minutes later my daughter texted me and asked me to come back to her chair. When I did, she said the bleach was burning her face and ears, and upon looking for the stylist and not being able to find her, I got paper towels from the bathroom and wiped the heavy bleach off the skin along her hairline, and tried to wipe it off her ears but it was difficult with the foil. The skin on her hairline was already quite red after only about 7-8 minutes on her skin. In typical teen form, she said her ears were “fine” and she’d wait until the stylist got back. When the stylist returned nearly half an hour later, she saw my daughter’s skin and told her “that doesn’t normally happen” and advised her to use aloe vera on it when she got home. The rest of the appointment was fine, my daughter loves her hair, but as we were driving home from the appointment nearly 2 hours later (the appt took almost four hours), I noticed that my daughter had developed large blisters on her ears and that the red burns on her face were blistering and scabbing over. We got her home, applied aloe vera and balm, and will continue to do so. I considered going to urgent care, but read up on burn treatment and it doesn’t seem there is anything different or more they can do, so I instead sent a message to the dermatologist. I called the salon manager Mischa when we got home and when we connected the next day I told her about my daughter’s burns and suggested some safety protocols to ensure this didn’t happen in the future. She was polite, but essentially blamed us for the burns occurring. She said because my daughter is on a topical acne cream, that her dermatologist should have advised us of the risks of using bleach. Her dermatologist did not advise us of that risk, but also, there shouldn’t have been a full inch of excess thick bleach ON my daughter’s skin and ears. Had the stylist kept the bleach to the hair, we would not be in this horrible situation with my daughter likely being permanently scarred. Furthermore, my daughter does not use the cream on her ears and her ears are a total mess, heavily blistered and discolored, so the burns happened there with no cream involved. My suggestions, which again the manager did not feel were necessary, were that: 1. They inform clients up front when the color they desire is going to first require bleach so they can pause and consider whether they want to bleach their hair. We were not advised of this need. 2. They ask clients if there is anything that could possibly cause a reaction with the bleach before they start. Perhaps had they asked us we would have thought to share that my daughter uses a cream for acne prevention even though we had no idea this was an issue and perhaps the stylist would have been more careful with the application of the bleach. 3. That they apply vaseline or some other balm on the hairline and ears for clients when they are getting bleach, the same way they SHOULD do when clients are getting color to provide a protective layer. 4. That they have aloe vera, balm and other remedies for these sorts of burns should they occur in the future so that clients can be treated immediately. And that they check for a reaction BEFORE leaving a client alone in the chair for an extended period. I’m really upset this happened to my daughter and that her gorgeous skin will likely be permanently scarred as a result, which just sucks and was totally avoidable. (Site is currently not letting me upload photos, I will as soon as I can.)”
