“Having stayed at this hotel multiple nights at least twice a year for the last 10+years, with the exception of the past 3 because of the great location, service and vibe, this time it felt as if the Cullen had lost its mojo.|The …”

“I’d like to give acknowledgement to the wonderful and hospitable staff of Clarion Suites Gateway! You made our trip to be a memorable one, especially as you’ve upgraded our room. Thank you! Our room was clean, bright and spacious. The amenities were useful for our stay. I’d definitely book here again!”

“Robert Burns may look like your standard Northside pub on the outside, but on the inside is a cute, cosy dining room serving "elevated pub fare" plus great cocktails. The space is warm and a welcome a mix of vintage and contemporary, featuring wicker seating and tartar floors and walls. The menu is large and heavily Italian-inspired, with sections for veggies, pastas, proteins and small plates. The vegetarian options are scattered around the menu so ask if you need guidance. I was advised to try the green tomato salad which is light and fresh and served with straciatella, one of my favourite cheeses. I was also recommended the cauliflower, which is incredible. It's roasted to a point where it becomes smoky but not too crisp and served with salad, roasted asparagus, pecorino and hazelnuts which add a great texture. For mains, I tried the super soft and fluffy gnocchi which almost had a filled dumpling consistency. While lots of pub gnocchi can be too dense and lacking flavour, this one had perfect amount of both. My partner enjoyed a parma which he also voucher for heavily. If you eat seafood, the squid is beautifully presented and apparently quite good as well. From the cocktail list, I can recommend the Pink Lady and the Robbie Burns Sour - both light and sweet and fruity and refreshing.”

“Stayed there a few weeks ago and it has taken me a while to work out how to phrase it. The rooms were so gross. There was over 20 hairs in the bed. They refused to change the sheets saying it wasn’t there job. Handed me one sheet to change the bedding, had to ask for two More sheets.None of which was the right size and also ask for pillow slips. I asked for a new room only to find out the new bed had hair between the sheets also. So terrible. The next night they upgraded me to a nicer suite. No apology or taking ownership for the issue. I would have expected to offer to give money back. Very surprising. And sad. We spent thousands renting their conference space which was handled poorly. Didn’t even tell us we had extra space available to us. The large conference room was nice though and someone was there to help us when needed. I get that they were embarrassed possibly but go out of your way for the customer when it is so clear that you have done wrong.”

“Such a great hotel. Location was the best possible in my opinion. The lane below has lots of yum coffee, breakfast and lunch options. Our room was super quiet and dark...perfect. Only slight negative was that the air conditioning was a bit average at times. Staff were helpful and friendly. Would book here again if I ever get the luck to return to Melbourne in future.”

“Excellent location right in the centre of the city and brilliant value for money. The room was a decent size and very comfy. The bathroom was small but clean, and every day housekeeping did a fantastic job. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. I really can’t fault it for the rates they charge. Highly recommended!”

“Good location. Handy for Italian restaurants, groceries and shopping. The adjacent wine bar is lovely. My stay was enjoyable :) The only thing I can fault is the layout (it’s old school motel style) so it’s not very sound proof - if someone is checking out/in you’ll hear their bags rolling. Also, the bathrooms have see through doors so if you’re sharing and that’s an issue, keep that in mind.”

“In my opinion, this hotel should be rated as a 3-star. We recently stayed there and explicitly mentioned during reservation that we were on our honeymoon, requesting a clean and functional room to fully enjoy our trip without any issues. 1. Despite arriving early and our room being ready, we were asked to pay extra for early check-in, which we declined and arrived at the scheduled time. 2. The receptionist was unwelcoming. 3. The room we were assigned was dirty, particularly the bathroom which was surprising considering the hotel appears to be newly built. I believe a hotel branding itself as a 4-star establishment should ensure the cleanliness of its rooms, as this is unacceptable. Additionally, the spaces between tiles changed color to black because they were not cleaned. Positive aspects: 1. When the air conditioning in our room malfunctioned, we were promptly relocated to another room with functioning air conditioning. 2. They securely stored our luggage until 2 PM, allowing us to explore the city. 3. The hotel's location couldn't be better.”

“Going to start off the review by saying it’s really not that good. In a nutshell, it’s a place to cook and sleep. Starting with the bathrooms, hot water was uncommon and the tap for hot water in the showers was quite literally a dribble which meant if you wanted a proper shower it was cold. The toilets were okay, albeit a little dirty and the sinks were fine. My girlfriend had the issue of no hairdryer, and when we asked for one we were told they don’t hand them out anymore due to people stealing them. She has also said that only two of the ten lights in the female bathroom work. Onto the room. When we first arrived, only one bed was actually made, even though we checked in after the time suggested. We were in a 4 bed room which is good, but it was tiny. No space for 4 peoples luggage, however the lockers were suitable for two backpacks each, which is nice. There was no air-con, but it wasn’t too bad in the room as the evenings are fairly cool, and there was a fan on the wall which reached each bed when on the swing setting. The beds are uncomfortable as they are a thin foam mattress on a wire frame and they creek with every movement. There are also no curtains on the beds which is a nice touch in other hostels. You get woken up at 9:30 every morning as the announcement over the speakers reminds people to check out before 10am (which is early). The kitchen wasn’t the best either, with it being dirty all of the time. Most nights we had to wait for knifes and forks to be used and washed as there weren’t enough provided, so keep this in mind when packing, and it is probably worth buying your own pan as they are scarce too. The fridges looked clean but had an off putting smell. The common room was small, with most of it being dining tables and chairs, with two sofas and one pool table for the whole hostel which has about 60 rooms I’d say. Washing our clothes was also a nightmare as there are four washers and four dryers, and it costs four dollars for each. Bring your own washing powder/liquid too as the one you pay for is wash in the sink stuff. The balcony/rooftop room is quiet and the pathetic excuse for a gym is set of weights and a yoga mat. Overall, for the hostel commemorating 50 years of hostels in Australia, it’s disappointing. I won’t even mention the lift and how scary it is. There is no wonder it’s closing down, very unhappy with our stay.”

Essence Hotel Carlton

609 Swanston St, Carlton VIC 3053, Australia

“A little small I would only recommend it if you’re staying for a night or two. Minimal amenities but it gets the job done. It’s basically like University accommodation. I had a pleasant night here and the location is very good for Queen Victoria Market and the Melbourne Museum. Pretty good price though so you get what you pay for. One thing I would put in high regard is the shower it’s really good, high pressure and heats fast.”

“Booked a 3 bedroom apartment, received a room with 2 single beds. After 2 hours of discussion nothing came of it so one of us had to sleep on the couch. Took almost an hour to check in. Lobby was dirty and unwelcoming. All-round poor experience.”

“Spent five days between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve, booked a private room so no complain regarding the stay, noise kept to a minimum from the street on the 4th floor. Great customer service as the staff took our first night off the booking when our flight was cancelled. Plenty of bathrooms facilities regularly cleaned, perfect position near train, bus and tram stations, every restaurant and bar you can imagine at your doorstep. Highlight of the stay was the rooftop coffee shop and the best coffee we had in Melbourne, all thanks to Luca. Not only he makes amazing coffee, but he is also kind, full of suggestion and a pleasure to talk to, if you don't go up there to chat with him while sipping his great coffee, you are missing out. Would book again.”
