Kitakaruizawa Sweetgrass
4.5
( 8 reviews )
Closed until 02:00 PM

1990-579 Kitakaruizawa, Naganohara, Agatsuma District, Gunma 377-1412, Japan

“Great camping ground. It has a combination of cabins already prepared with mats, or plots where you can pitch a tent. The cabins are an experience to remember as they have a fire stove from the old days, and although the staff will show you how to use it, the true test comes when you have to build a fire in your own cabin. Succeed, and you look like a real man! Fail, and you will freeze over night! It is totally worth it... But, take into consideration that the night stay is cheap for a reason... Firewood, pots, pans, matches, starter feul, sleeping bag, shower and food costs money. You will spend and spend if you come under prepared. Be careful.”

“As a HongKonger, I was astonished by the Hong Kong book sections, the posters and decorations are literally work of passions. On top of that, these books are no longer allowed to publish in Hong Kong, I do appreciate that part of history is well preserved and cherished in Japan. Hat off to the Tokyodo staff.”

“The set is delicious. The parfait is voluminous even if you order half. It has a relaxing Showa retro feel. However, since the uncle makes it alone, he forgets about busy times (lunch time, etc.) There have been times when I have had to wait so long😅”

Tsuchikura-298-81 Kamiarisu, Sumita, Kesen District, Iwate 029-2501, Japan

“You may want to make it a "secret place" so much that you don't want to tell anyone about your true feelings. This time as well, I guided some friends from outside the prefecture to a one-day course that featured Iwate-style cuisine, Kagami Rock and Tono Genghis Khan, and I think they were very happy. It is said that the rental of rain boots is no longer available, and that it will be renewed in 2024 to make it even more fun...so it is recommended to stay warm in winter. I'm looking forward to another little adventure.”

Awaji Monkey Center
4.1
( 8 reviews )

289 Hatadagumi, Sumoto, Hyogo 656-2533, Japan

“Hi everyone! I’m going to write about Awaji Monkey Center (MC) and compare it with Arashiyama Monkey Park (MP) hoping that it’ll help you plan your trip. First off, I support animal shelters and rescue groups and I don’t go to zoos. Awaji MC is not a zoo, it’s a place where monkeys live in the wild and us humans are just allowed to come and see them. Awaji MC does not interfere in any way: they do not treat injuries or administer medications, they do not assist monkeys. They track them using GPS collars for research purposes and give them healthy snack like yams (satsumaimo), bananas, pressed barley (oshi mugi) but other than that there’s no intervention. The good news that the monkeys are self sufficient as they support each other and raise babies together, and they all look very healthy including those that are quite old now. In that regard Awaji MC follows the same approach as Arashiyama Monkey park. Their role is supporting natural life cycle and observing. Now let me compare Awaji MC and Arashiyama Monkey Park. The most important difference is the size of the facility. Awaji MC is a 5 min walk. From the parking lot next to the sea you walk a short loop for 5 min and that’s all you get. There’s a small monkey onsen and a small snack area, and then a steep hill where monkeys jump around and climb trees. As around 300 monkeys live there, you’ll see a lot of monkeys and you’ll be able to see all sorts of communication patterns. It’s December now and there are a lot of babies that were born in summer, very cute and fun to watch. They’re all extremely docile. Here and there fights occur, but nothing too violent, and there are no monkeys that are injured or very sick. As the area is so small, you’ll be surrounded by monkeys. The monkeys are really friendly to each other and people. There are several very old monkeys that are still quite genki, one monkey with a bad eye, and this year there’s a baby monkey that was born with a birth defect, no hands. Of course this baby won my heart. Her name is Nina. She has arms but no hands. She’s learned to walk like a human using her legs and she can climb and play. It’s hard for her because hands are very important for monkey well-being but her future looks promising because the colony is generally very supportive. The staff said that Nina is eating well and she can play with other babies and moms so she should be ok. Gambatte, Nina! Arashiyama MP is much bigger. From the parking lot you’ll have to climb hills and it’ll take about 40 min. The MP is located on the mountain top, but you’ll start seeing monkeys 10 min before you reach it. There are a lot of monkeys living there too, they’re just scattered around more. There’s a feeding area so monkeys hang around there. You’ll see families and babies. No monkey onsen. You can buy healthy snacks and feed the monkeys, you’ll go inside a house with wire protected windows to do that. The view is fantastic. There are benches and those view binoculars for ¥100. The view area ends as a steep hill but there are cool trees where monkeys sleep, groom and play. I guess, I’d go Awaji MC if: you are based in Kobe or around (Akashi Kaikyo bridge costs! It’s almost ¥2,000 one way) and you have small kids: no hiking, just come and go. I’d go to Arashiyama MP if you’re based in Kobe (same travel time), Osaka or Kyoto, and you want to hike a little bit and see the view. You can also go to other famous Kyoto places after that. SUMMARY Animal sanctuaries where we humans can just observe animals without caging them is the best way to see animals, and both Awaji MC and Arashiyama MP provide an excellent opportunity to do that. Attached are the photos from Awaji MC. Enjoy your trip!”

Cinema Sunshine Lalaport Numazu
4.1
( 8 reviews )

Japan, 〒410-0302 Shizuoka, Numazu, Higashishiiji, 字東荒301番地3他 ららぽーと沼津3階

“The bigger of the two Cinema Sunshines in Numazu. Located on the third floor of the LaLaport shopping centre. Great selection of showings (including films not being played at the other Cinema Sunshine in BiVi), easy-to-use ticket machines and in a great location to while away the time (restaurants and shops galore, and the unfortunately-named Korona World game centre). Cinema Sunshine also offers a stamp card which is great for regular moviegoers; six stamps and ¥210 for another film (you'll probably have to ask them for the card though). Regular rotation of screenings of older films at cheaper-than-usual ticket costs for their 午前十時の映画祭 (10 A.M. film festival), where you can watch classics like "Lawrence of Arabia" and "My Fair Lady".”

“I'm from Iwate, but I visit several times a year. Because I really like the fried shrimp here. Extra-thick shrimp with succulent flesh and just the right amount of batter, perfectly fried... Please let me know if there's a place that's better than this?! Of course, the hamburgers and ramen are also consistently delicious. I feel sorry for myself as I splash the homemade dressing on my dressing, and I always buy it as a souvenir. Anyway, let's serve something delicious! Let's revitalize Wakuya! It's a wonderful shop where you can feel the enthusiasm. I want you to continue to do your best.”

“We were so happy to see autumn here. We stayed at Awanoyu for one night and spent the next morning exploring the area. This open-air onsen is public at 520 yen per adult. Having enjoyed onsen at Awanoyu already, we went for this public bath, which is another gem with the view of the river. After this, we walked and drove around Shirahone Onsen for autumn leaves.”

“This is a nice theater located in downtown Toyama as part of the Sogawa shopping street. The facilities are modern and clean.
