“This trail is one of my favorites spots to hike and the views are breathtaking and beautiful specially in the fall. Came on a weekday after 2pm and there were parking spots available. You can keep going on the trail after taking the stairs to go up on the rock. I had a great time!!!”

Linville Falls

( 8 reviews )

9775 Linville Falls Hwy, Newland, NC 28657, United States

“I was entertaining a friend from Mexico who wanted to see the fall colors, so I decided to check the falls out after going through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Roan Mountain State Park. We both agreed that this was the best view of anything we saw on the trip. We didn’t have much time, so we were only able to make it to the upper falls overlook, Chimney View overlook, and Erwin’s View overlook. We both wished we had a lot more time, as we only had about an hour until it got dark. While it is possible to do the whole thing in an hour, I would say that there is easily half a day of hiking and viewing available here.”

4099 S 17th St, Wilmington, NC 28412, United States

“The bathrooms are not open 7 days a week. Very inconvenient as adults and even more so with kids. Thus the reason for two stars. The playground is small, not the park to visit for playground use compared to others in the area. The bridge on the playground is sketchy. The paved, shaded walkway and cross city trail connection earned all the stars here. Great park to walk, run, or bike.”

“Great for a short hike to a beautiful small water fall. There is some rough areas with rocks and roots and uphill on the way back, there are benches along the way so you can take a break if needed. If you're close Otter Falls is definitely worth the effort. Other trails are available here as well.”

“Beautiful place but I was a little disappointed. We were expecting trees bigger around than our water oaks, but these weren't. They were very tall. It's a looong, rough hike back to see the big trees. I was underwhelmed.”

Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary

Closed until 06:00 AM

1056 Merrimon Ave, Asheville, NC 28804, United States

“A really beautiful spot, we came in the winter there wasn't much to see except a few squirrels. However there are plenty of places to sit and soak up the sunshine. They do have a spot in the main parking lot to donate a dollar for parking. If I lived in the area this would definitely be a place I'd come to often to clear my mind. The lake itself is quite large and there are different locations to access walking paths around it.”

Rainbow Falls And Turtleback Trailhead
4.8
( 8 reviews )

Lake Toxaway, NC 28747, United States

“A nice hike down to a breathtaking waterfall. When the sun hits the water spray just right, a. rainbow arches up and over. The water is absolutely refreshing for a summer day. What better way to cool off from your hike than to jump in the water! I had such a great time playing around the fall, that I didn’t finish the hike up to turtleback. That just means I have to go back. The hike up and out will definitely take your breath away, and can be a endurance challenge. It is so worth it. This is one of my favorite waterfalls in NC. Great place to take a light picnic ♡ definitely take your water bottles. Please remember to carry out what you carry in! Plenty of parking at the trailhead!”

High Shoals Falls

Closed until 07:00 AM

South Mountains State Park, 3001 S Mountain Park, Connelly Springs, NC 28612, United States

“This is a beautiful hike to the High Shoals Fall at South Mountain State Park. There are multiple hiking trails throughout the park. We choose to hike this one for the waterfall. When you enter the park, you drive all the way to the last parking lot. There are restrooms and beautiful picnic areas. Take the time to look at the map at the entrance of the park. It will advise you which paths to take and the intensity of the hike. The hike once you get closer to the falls and after is pretty intense, but thankfully, they do have resting benches along the way. The trail follows the river, and there are plenty of places to stop and rest as well as cool of if need be. The water is cold but feels great on a nice, warm day. The trails are well marked with color markers, and there are signs everywhere along the trail that help direct you. Bring plenty of water with you to stay hydrated. This was a beautiful hike, and we definitely recommend this hike. Beautiful views and trails.”

Craven Gap Trail

Asheville, NC 28805, United States

“Do you remember those choose your own adventure books from the '80s? this trail is like one of those. there's lots of crossroads where you have to make a decision, because the trail isn't marked. I was trying to hike alongside the parkway to Haw Creek valley overlook. seems like it should have been pretty easy, right? But before I knew it I was spit out onto a residential road (independence boulevard) with nowhere to go but back where I came from. I'm sure it's a great trail if you know where to turn, I'll come back and give it another try and choose a different adventure.”
