“I've spent a lot of time here through out the years. It's clean and the walkable pavement is very smooth. This park has very easy beginners hiking trails and it's a great place to take my dog here with me. Like every forest preserve, there are weirdos there but I've had minimal interactions.”

Prairie Wolf Dog Park
4.8
( 8 reviews )
Open until 07:00 PM

1917-2075 S Waukegan Rd, Lake Forest, IL 60045, United States

“Absolutely phenomenal park. There are a couple small fenced areas, and then the larger dog area you enter from the parking lot is fully fenced (trust me, my husky mix and I checked). There's also a separate fenced off swimming hole area (frozen over, now). For any escape-prone or wanderer dogs be aware that I saw two Vizslas easily jump the fence by the watering hole, so it's definitely possible, and the gates headed to the watering hole have a bit of a gap under them where a small or very determined dog could sneak underneath. All in all a superb park and we will absolutely be back!”

“A great place for a walk,/og. This place is beautiful especially in the fall when the leaves change Colors. Plenty of Parking unless they have soccer practice but it doesn't get too crowded. Finally, I feel safe coming to this place.”

Rim Rock National Recreation Trail
4.8
( 8 reviews )

Eagle Creek, RR 1 Box 198B, Findlay, IL 62534, United States

“Pretty little easy hike of about half an hour to an hour. Lots of free parking. No entrance fees. Quite a few picknick benches in the shade under the trees. Couple of barbecues available. Two porta potties as restrooms. There's an upper and a lower trail route. We did the upper one. Some nice views. Unfortunately the stairs connecting the two have been removed months ago with no indication if they're going to be restored and if so when.”

Park Office & Maintenance Shop, 1510 46th Ave, Rock Island, IL 61201, United States

“Nice park with a decent hiking trail and small museum. Based on the spider webs, the trail was not heavily used and you could tell there was some erosin issues along the river”

Swallow Cliff Woods-south

Open until 07:00 PM

South La Grange Road, Palos Park, IL 60464, United States

“10/10 recommend these trails and the stairs! Beautiful any time of year and so many options for short and long walks/runs/bike rides. Depending on your child(ren) and stroller, it's definitely an option to use it though the ride is bumpy and sometimes muddy. Also very hilly, so be sure to bring a stroller strap for safety. I've been here for personal fitness, too. The stairs are a good strength and cardio option for someone who likes being active outdoors. They are partially shaded, depending on the time of year and day, but be sure to bring plenty of water! If you're looking for an option for your baby, I've brought mine here in a carrier and backpack and we've wandered the trails for hours (and took a turn or two on the stairs). It takes some planning, but again, be sure to bring plenty of water as the hills can bring on a good sweat. Many trails also allow leashed dogs, too!”

Jubilee College State Park

“Review Date: October 14th, 2015 First impressions are hard to change… If you live in Illinois at all, you know of the budget cuts, budget cuts, tax increases, budget cuts. Jubilee College State Park is one of those that has been hit by budget cuts. Decided to check this place and Jubilee Cafe out in the same day. My first time there, I encountered a few areas that were closed due to inadequate staffing. So a lot of places have become overgrown and broken down. This state park is beautiful and it’s a shame that it is in such a bad shape. While looking up some info on it to write this short blog, it appears that after 3 years they finally have a (volunteer?) Park Ranger and a volunteer group to help clean the place up and make it usable. Having never been here, I tried quite a few different places that I thought were openings to go hiking, but I really never could tell what was what since everything was overgrown. Now if this volunteer group is helping out and making the place a bit friendlier, I would love to go back and check it out again. Maybe even update this blog post. I just hope I don’t have to mark it ‘Closed’. It fills me with such sorrow that beautiful recreational places like these are cut short on budgets and fall into disuse. I won’t get into politics, but I hope they figure something out and restore this park and all the other closed/understaffed to their rightful natural beauty.”

Relics of times gone bye, don't know their history but it allows the mind to wander . Picnic areas abound & many areas with benches for resting. Beautiful tranquil water areas. As always watch where you walk, some areas are softer than others! You will not be disappointed....a weekend hike must !!”

“A wonderful place to see the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, large barges moored and piloted, a memorial to Lewis and Clark visiting the site. A very natural area with a parking lot at the entrance and a drive to almost the confluence when gate is open. A peaceful location to sit and contemplate the pace of life back in the day.”
