5 Chome-18-2 Shinko, Otaru, Hokkaido 047-0152, Japan

“Our stay at Otaru Kourakuen was absolutely delightful, making it an ideal choice for a family trip and holiday. The highlight of our experience was undoubtedly the private hot spring in our room, which was simply outstanding and couldn't have been any better. We thoroughly enjoyed the rejuvenating and relaxing baths it provided. The service we received throughout our stay was exceptional, and the staff went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. From check-in to check-out, their attentiveness and professionalism were commendable. Moreover, the meal arrangements exceeded our expectations, with top-notch culinary offerings that truly impressed us. One minor consideration is that the hotel's location is a bit far from the JR station. However, this wasn't a major concern as taxis and private cars are readily available, making transportation to and from the hotel hassle-free.”

“This is probably the most comfortable hotel I've stayed in Hokkaido. The in-room washer-dryer is great for those who like cleanliness and want to stay longer. The hot spring bath in the room is also ideal for stress relief. The soundproofing in the corner rooms is quite good. I must praise the room lighting for being very bright, unlike many older hotels that are dim and make it hard to pack at night. The hotel is also very close to the Hakodate Morning Market, where you can enjoy a variety of delicious breakfasts.”

“Hotel is nicely located at the top overlooking the cape . Thus, driving is much needed to access this place . French set up and decor , dinner is French Cuisine wannabe… food can be better .French inspired ? Cuisine … ingredients were fresh , however the execution left a lot to be desired … Breakfast is Japanese set . Victoria style decor is certainly added the castle feel for guests ; in room Onsen is a nice feature . Hotel waitering staffs are polite and trying . Would stay for the view and the feel but not the food . Recommended .”

“The room is huge and fantastic as we have the 1.5 room, we didnt know there was a double bed at living room. We could have just stay in normal 1 bedroom is sufficient for us. The location is great near to many shuttle bus and also near to Seico Super market and eateries and ski rental shop. The onsen is great too. But there is 2 main issue with AYA that really put me off and I will serious consider not to return to this resort. first is the daily breakfast almost everyday the same with same salad, same cold dish and hard bread. Wish they can do something simple inexpensive but still nice to have like simple fried egg, omelette or just cereal or fruit. Second is the Ski rental shop named Wow Niseko rental. We had terrible experience which I have a separate review on Wow Niseko so that not to affect AYA rating as overall it is still a nice resort. We prebook and fully paid for our ski equipment few month before we arrive. we do the fitting one day before the lesson start. They indicate close at 8pm but they never say their last fitting is 7.15pm and keep saying that they need to work overtime because we are late for fitting. After fitting for the kids they said no time to fit for adult, fine. Next day morning when we want to retrieve rental equipment, they said they dont have kids snowboard equipment and adult. after 1 hour of arguement (can you imagine spend your first day of holiday fighting with people from 8am to 9am. They then bring out equipment for adult. Apparently due to misscommunication they only lack of kids equipment. So we have to walk across the street to rent from another company as we were already late for the private ski lesson. althought Eventually they give full refund for the ski equipment that they cant provide / provided wrong size. But the Manager in charge from wow niseko did not apologise and yet he claimed that because we have a big group that coming to take ski rental at the same time that why they cannot handle (the fact is still they dont have for kids snow board equipment) There is something really wrong with the management of WOW niseko. I will not want to come here again for another horrible experience. Also if you make payment better use credit card instead of paynow. For the refund if credit card they just refund to same card. but for payment they need us provide proof of payment with bank detail which is another painful process to trace back.”

“A ryokan that has been running for many years, it is old but charming- the rooms are beautiful still and it was quite comfortable for our stay in early Feb/winter. Had wonderful ocean views and even more spectacular in winter, the view from the onsen was also very beautiful Exceptional service from the staff and the shuttle was also very convenient. Thank you to the staff for accommodating when we had to arrive later than intended (we missed a flight !!). dinner and breakfast were included and is a true feast (particularly for seafood lovers!) Of the ryokan I have been to, Hotel Izumi has the most exceptional value for money. It is beautiful but takes a little bit more effort to get to, however the shuttle is convenient and will pick you up from JR Noboribetsu station when you arrange with the staff. We used our stay as a base to explore Noboribetsu Onsen, Jigokudani etc”

“A nice New looking hotel with a decent toilet/bath setup. It had decent free Wifi. The staff were friendly. Only issues: The free bar closes at 9PM 😭 The morning complimentary buffet is PACKED. There was not enough seats so we had to take our food back to our room. Also the buffet food was very sparse when we arrived e.g 4 wieners left . That didn't stop me from being a greedy git and grabbing plenty of Chocolate and plain Croissants, One of the other guests looked at me as i grabbed a lot as there was nothing else to my fancy 🤣 I wanted to go into the Onsen but I have to keep my hand wrap dry (broken finger) My Wife and I will definitely return, the next time we stay in Kushiro.”

“Amazing experience. Modern clean design but tradicional atmosphere. Amazing onsen with cold and hot indoor baths and outdoor hot bath. Amazing beer bar and restaurant. Living area with computers, table games, sofas and perfect quite atmosphere for relax and chilling out. The only negative point would be the very simple mattress, too hard for western clients like us.”

“Okay place. The communal area in the third floor is quite nice with free tea/coffee. Staff were helpful at checkin. Towels and other things not included but can he rented for a fee. Sheets and pillows provided but the bed wasn't made, which seemed a little stingy as most budget places will still have you arrive to a made bed. We had a private room which was very small but just big enough to fit 2 bags in - if you're a couple that doesn't travel light it would potentially be too tight. Walls are very thin so even in a private room you can hear neighbours moving around or snoring very clearly. They do provide free earplugs to help with this. The lift is extremely annoying. It stops on the third floor on the way up and down every time and there's only one small lift to service the whole building. Quite often it's so full that you need to wait for the next one to go down. The door also closes very quickly, meaning it closed on me a few times and one time my wife didn't make it in because it closed while she was still trying to get through the people piling out and had to wait for it to go all the way to the tenth floor and back again. I'm not sure what they could do about this... but certainly not stopping on floor 3 every time would help. Overall, fine and about worth the money. Nothing amazing but also no massive red flags. All the staff were very friendly and lovely.”

“This was the best hotel experience I had in my 3 weeks in Japan. Service: The hotel staff were all super nice, and they all spoke English. When I first arrived they chauffeured me around town to pick up my lift pass and ski rentals. They also returned my skis to the ski rental for me. They chauffeured me to the train station on my departure. Rooms: The rooms are very large for Japanese standards. The bathrooms are more akin to western style bathrooms built with tile and glass as opposed to the typical Japanese prefabricated plastic bathrooms. There is a mini kitchenette, with mini fridge and sink. There is a closet with a large amount of space, a desk, and dining table, Apple TV and Boss speakers for entertainment. Amenities: Ski/snowboard storage, boot lockers, indoor and outdoor onsen, swimming pool (though it was not open when I was there), restaurant, ski in/ski trail out from the back.”
