“We had a very pleasant and relaxing stay of 1 night, inclusive of breakfast and dinner. We stayed in their traditional style Japanese rooms without a shower. The room is spacious and clean. The ambiance and aesthetic of the hotel were on point. The food was unbelievably delicious and the presentation was mesmerizing. Love that they offered us an English menu with our names printed on it. Communication wasn’t an issue for us. The service was above and beyond. We had asked for one serving of dessert only because we were extremely full. They saved the other set for us to eat during breakfast and they actually served it to us during breakfast without any reminder! Booking the private onsens was super easy. We got to use all 3 options during one night stay. The hotel was not very busy, so maybe this is why. They were individually unique and clean. They all include showers. Since booking them was so easy we didn’t use their public onsen. We want to give a big Thank You to all the staff for making our stay very special and memorable. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking to see Matsumoto! Only 20 mins bus ride from the Matsumoto station! The strawberry farm nearby is a must visit for super sweet and juicy strawberries 🍓”

Reason this doesn’t get a 5 is they only accept cash, which is deeply frustrating. We ended up using all our cash to pay for the room, last night spent over an hour in search for an ATM which accepts international to no avail. Unsure how we will pay the room service and bus tickets tomorrow but that’s another day 😂 so close to 5.”

“I stayed here for a couple of nights in early April 2018. It’s still early in the season so there was no one else staying here but me. I think they hooked me up on the price I paid about $50 USD a night and had the whole place to myself. The water was fantastic. Hot water tub but with a self-adjusting cold tap so you can get it just perfect to how you like it. Only 640 yen for dinner, the first night was just some mushroom soba but the second night it was soup veggies chicken and rice. And you get tea. So good. The owners are very nice and gracious but be prepared to get your phone out to translate. Owner even dropped me off at the train station! That’s service! Small bottle of sake they charge 730 yen. Be careful if hiking up to Honzawa hot springs I went wearing sandals and had to turn back just a mile short of the springs cause the snow was just way too high and the earth kept giving out on the trail and I would fall two feet into muddy holes every ten steps. A terrible trail to hike if too early in the season. Also very cold up there so be prepared if you are camping with warm clothes. The owner told me it was snowy but I just didn’t listen. Now I have to come back to Japan one day to soak at Inagoyu and finally make it up to Honzawa! editing a few months later: the only thing I would be worried about here is if there is enough room in the tub when they are packed! I was literally the only person the two nights I stayed there so I was able to kick back with sake in the tub and soak for hours. To my knowledge there was only one tub for soaking at the inn. The tub is fairly small it really couldn't fit more than 2-3 people tops. Even then it would be cramped, anyways, happy soaking!”

“Customer service at this hotel was without a doubt the absolute worst I have ever experienced. 2 separate rooms were booked months in advance and then on arrival we were hit with a $1600 bill saying that the hotel had changed its policy and only 1 occupant would be allowed in each of the room. We booked 2 full size rooms for obviously 2 people to stay in each and to be hit with this bill on arrival 2 months after booking is absolutely ridiculous and disgusting. As if this wasn’t enough, we were then told we were not allowed to use any of the facilities in the complex until it was sorted. Part of these facilities were showers so we were unable to use the showers after checking in that night and as they didn’t manage to sort it by the next day we were then unable to use the showers the next morning. Obviously after a day of snowboarding, not be able to use a shower to wash and warm up was bloody horrible. Overall our experience at this hotel was horrible, we would definitely not recommend and most definitely will not be coming back.”

“Perfect 2 night stay, the staff where very welcoming! We are foreigners from Australia and wanted to get into the depth of Japan and stay true Ryokan. This experience was fantastic for us, even with little to no Japanese vocabulary we managed. Its easier to take a Taxi from Chino Station rather than the bus, we couldn't really understand the timetable.. and the staff arranged a Taxi for us upon departure. Food is traditional style local Japan mountain cuisine and done well. It was a different experience and we enjoyed that. I wish I took more photos of the room and outdoor hot bath. “We really enjoyed our three nights at Goryukan. We had a beautiful view of Happo One from our mountain-facing room. The hotel was very quiet and we couldnt hear anyone from our room. Our room was equipped with two twin-sized beds for me and my husband so we both decided to share one bed and it wasn't the most comfortable. The location was good and walkable to the restaurants and shops in Happo One. Only a 5 min walk to one of the lifts and 15 mins or more to the gondola. The free shuttle was just down the street from the hotel. The hotel is a bit outdated especially our room and the hallways. The lobby, sitting area and eating areas appeared more newly renovated compared to the rooms. The ski lockers were very big and convenient to exit and enter. The onsen was amazing with an indoor and outdoor onsen. I am fascinated by how fast and efficient the one and only elevator was. The free breakfast was very good and had plenty to choose from. Unfortunately we were not a big fan of The Five restaurant for dinner. It only offered 3 Japanese dishes and the rest were american dishes. Although our stay was nice, we will try a different hotel if we come back to Happo One.”

“We visited in November, not exactly the best time at this location. Nagano generally has red leaves all over, but the Mibu River was dried out, quite the disappointment. The hotel is a little out of its way, but its only 10 minutes to closest town and 15 minutes to larger townships. The best time to visit should be Sakura season, I bet they should have full house then. Location: Hotel is located by a River, and it is about 15 minutes drive to nearest town/restaurants clusters. So its quiet and secluded. Staff: Everything were considerably smooth, but it seemed like they were not prepared for foreign visitors (right after COVID bans were lifted and Japanese government nation-wide travel-coupons). Room: Spacious in Japanese terms, classic and clean, but would need some updating soon. There was a small balcony with the river view, overlooking the restaurants and Onsen. View: Unfortunately when we were there, the river has dried out! So it was kind of sad - they should include that fact in their marketing information or website - we were quite disappointed. Food (Breakfast) - Standard Japanese Breakfast buffet style - you get the bread side of things, and the congee/rice side of things too. We are quite used to this particular hotel-breakfast so we were fine with it. But still lack a little luster - they should have a local specialty like a local milk or maybe eggs from local sources... Onsen - Surprisingly the onsen generally added quite a few marks to the experience. The outdoor bath was just right, overlooking the (dried) river and very exquisite autumn colours. Water-temperatures were spot on, the bath well-equipped, but expect no free after-onsen milk/drinks. We will keep in mind next time if we travel to Nagano for Sakura, this hotel will be a hidden gem then. Overall we did enjoy the stay.”
