“We had here the New Year’s dinner. Booked in advance, payed a deposit as well. As soon as we arrived, we were a bit lost - nobody welcomed us, so we had to find somebody who could help us and lead to our table. Apart from that, everything else was great. We liked all the food served (apart from a couple of things, but it was just according our personal tastes). We also took a bottle of wine to share. Our waitress was very nice, explained us all the dishes, proposed to have some breaks between the servings. We left a bit before 12am, so don’t know if they made a countdown or something else.”

“We've been in Italy for two weeks, and our lunch today is definitely in our top 3 meals. Beautiful restaurant with inside and outside seating. Excellent service. We can highly recommend the pork shank (huge), the soup with ravioli, the mixed salad (with ingredients from their garden), and the apple cake with ice cream. The chef really knows their flavors - the sides to the shank were perfect (veggies, croquettes, and fried polenta). If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a detour. Yum!!!”

The place is big but don't go there on saturday evening without a reservation like us, or you will be forced to clear the table within a given time or not get one at all. That's how popular it is. Compared to other pizzas in the area it's Napoli style and they use ingredients from Campania. They move really fast, almost no wait. Our pizzas were great (Putipu and Fantasia) and we tried also the tiramisu and pistacchio cream cheesecake.”

“Despite reading other reviews, we were rather disappointed. All because we don't speak Italian?? This place lacks the typical mountain hospitality we had consistently along AV2. The staff neglected us for good 15 min at check-in, while several of them kept walking pass us in and out of the bar where we had to wait standing with full luggage. We arrived around 17pm, way passed the check in time, and the dinner hadn't started so it is not like the place is super busy. We ordered dinner a la cart instead of half board (not knowing the difference), without realising the beds were then charged at a premium of 38 euro per person in a 12 people dormitory, so in the end it would be way more than half board. The young male staff could have said something, but he chose not to say there is a price difference, and instead laughed at us when we had to pay the outraged price at the check out. He also gave us wrong information about the bus which departs right in front of the door, despite we double checked with him right before we left. After we waited 30 min outside in vain, returned to the lobby and told him the bus didn't come, he simply said you need to catch the next one (which is 4 hours later!!). Later we realised there is a different Sunday schedule but it is written only in Italian. I would assume the staff would have know better than us. Sure the food is not bad there but overall we had a bad experience. Not entirely sure what we did wrong or different than other people who have given reviews. We did notice though at least that young male staff were a lot more friendlier to other Italian speaking guests. There are lots of other hotels in the area, we will make sure to avoid this place next time. PS Regarding the reply from the hotel: We arrived at 17pm, had to wait standing next to the bar with full rucksacks on us, and were not asked to wait at the terrace(sure it is lovely there, I would love to wait there instead). Nobody told us any difference when we opted out not to have half board. At the check-out we simply paid at the asked price, no embarrassment on your staff or us. We double checked with the staff 5 mins before the assumed bus schedule and were confirmed there was one coming in 5 min, in reality it came 4 hours later.”

“It’s quite an adventure to hike up there! It’s a good hike for beginners, the hike is definitely not easy but manageable with snow shoes! You have to wear snow shoes! The Bergl Alm itself is very cozy and offers good warming food, which you’ll need before you hike back!”

“Breathtakingly unwelcoming and unfriendly reception. This was the worst refuge I have encountered in three months of hiking through Slovenia, Austria and Italy. The manager appears to think he is running a five star hotel in the centre of Milan, not an Alpine Club refuge in the mountains. It was so awful that despite being tired after a hard day and having just fallen and hurt my hand, I opted to continue walking rather than stay at this dreadful place. Not a recommended stop on the E5. Edit: Firstly, I was not there on Sunday, it was a Friday and the place was almost empty. At most 10 other people. Secondly, I was not ordering food, I wished to stay at the refuge. Thirdly, my German is poor, but I was doing my best to use it. The manger refused to speak slowly so I could understand, despite REPEATED requests to do so. In the end, a young staff member had to translate his impatient, very fast speech for me. I am an Alpine Club member, however when I produced my membership card, he treated me as if I was trying to defraud him, despite the card clearly showing the reciprocal membership rights symbol. The card is accepted throughout Europe, including in multiple other Italian Alpine Club refuges. It is fortunate that after three months of continuous hiking in the mountains, I am extremely fit and strong and I was able to continue, with a 20kg pack and walk for 9.5 hours in order to find somewhere more welcoming to stay. It is an indication of how bad my reception was at this hut, that this was preferable.”
