“I have visited Kanpai Sushi twice for lunch in the summer of 2021 in a small group and a dinner in a larger group recently. Really nice: - extensive menu, large restaurant that is relatively calm and quiet with the sushi chefs working at a visible counter. - the ice creams are delicious - some of the sushi dishes are creative and delicious too (liked the maki wrapped in buckwheat) Room for improvement: - the service can get rather slow in the busy times and we got some of our orders confused while acting annoyed :( - the sizes of the dishes are difficult to predict, some nigiri sushi and sashimi can be very small. Make sure to confirm. I would probably try it again when it's calmer for lunch.”

“I was there for the tasting menu with my wife for her birthday and it was simply superb. Every part of the experience from the hard working and knowledgeable staff, who make each of the exquisite and beautifully prepared courses, made to perfection from the extremely hard working and expert chefs in the kitchen with Lorna, with the just the right amount of discrete theatre at the table to make them both exciting and memorable. The attention to detail and craft for each dish component is amazing and the Michelin star is well deserved. We absolutely loved it and will certainly return. Fantastic.”

“I always get the okonomyiaki, it’s really good, and it’s nice to have a place that offers something different from the same menu every other Japanese restaurant in the city has. The service is always very friendly and welcoming. I had the cheesecake for the first time on my last visit, and it was exquisite. It was one of those moments I had to put my laptop away (I was on a lunch break) and just close my eyes and enjoy every bite. Would eat the cheesecake everyday if I could!”

“We booked for our dad's 70th, and had a great time. Such a different experience to any other place in Edinburgh because of the intimacy and interaction with the team. Food was excellent and very interesting. I am not a regular eater of this calibre of food but the thought and preparation that goes into each dish was very impressive and has made me want to go back again. “Brought my girlfriend here for dinner on her birthday as she has a degree in Japanese and has always really enjoyed the culture and food. We were seated at a gorgeous marble table with comfortable chairs. Soft music was playing and the atmosphere was cosy and relaxed. The servers were incredibly attentive and polite. I've noticed that some have given negative reviews due to the time it takes for the food to arrive and this is true - service isn't quick and if we had made plans for after the meal perhaps then it would have been an issue. However, we had no plans and got to enjoy some time together to talk and enjoy drinks as we waited on our dinner. We were in no rush, but in any case, the food was entirely worth the wait. Our dishes were obviously made fresh and with great care and attention to detail. Generous portions, beautiful flavours and visually stunning. Often times in restaurants I've found fast service takes precedence over food quality - no doubt a result of customers clamouring for instant gratification and venues itching for fast customer turnover. In contrast, this felt like a calming oasis where good conversation, atmosphere and food made our dinner an experience in and of itself. We had a delightful time and were highly impressed. Thank you Oshibori for a perfect birthday treat for my partner!”
