Kikunoi Honten
4.5
( 8 reviews )

Japan, 〒605-0825 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, Shimokawaracho, 459

“really excellent dining experience, the private room with a view of the gorgeous garden really dials the experience up a notch. flavours are clean and light, highlighting the quality and the freshness ingredients themselves. the stand out dish was the hassun and the grilled ayu. have also seen some other bad reviews comparing this with other 2 or 3 Michelin star restaurants, which in my opinion is missing the point a little. you're not going to get the same punchy, explosive, and experimental flavours as you do from restaurants from the western hemisphere, which is exactly the point of an establishment like this. come here with the right (but not lower) expectations and you will leave feeling totally satisfied.”

“Unpopular opinion, but I felt the fish was “too fresh” it was a bit on the bland side. That said; great value for money (both on portions and taste of non-raw dishes). They were accommodating to customer requests as well and definitely worth a try. Be there at least 15 minutes before opening to be in the first service and be reminded there can service was fast, 30-45 minutes.”

“Very popular teppanyaki joint and we were lucky to get in without a reservation as we saw people being turned away because of the lack of it. Definitely slightly pricier but absolutely loved the flavor! The butter prawns were absolutely amazing and we had to order seconds because we devoured it so quickly”

“A true way of experiencing Japanese’s food. A real family (a chief and his lovely wife) welcoming tourists and guests into their house in order to serve them with food. The atmosphere was simple/basic yet it was elegant and amazing. You will feel like a son being served with food by your own family. The food itself was tasty and the omelette rice was one of the best I ever tried. The prices were pretty good (personally I consider them low) noting that in general there isn’t an expensive items on the menu so you can try whatever you want. They even serve you with free of charge salad. Highly recommend. By the way, there is no reservation and tourists don’t know about this place yet so go, sit, eat and enjoy before it gets well known and you will then have to wait in line!”

“Today, I had the pleasure of experiencing Chef Imai’s delicious creations. I was truly astonished, the food exceeded my expectation. I have watched the Netflix show featuring Chef Imai a while back. I have never expected that I would actually get a chance to taste his food and visit Monk. But somehow I did, and I am very grateful for this experience. The way I would describe it is that it felt more like embarking into a mesmerising journey, I got to experience new flavours and watch Chef Imai in action which was truly inspiring. You could tell from the live cooking that he had put his passion into each dish and presented it to us with so much love. It felt like he appreciated us tasting his dishes as much as we appreciated him cooking us the dishes. And the dishes were absolutely divine. I don’t want to say that his pizza dish was the best I have ever tasted because honestly I wouldn’t even dare compare it to any pizza I have ever tried. It’s different in the best possible way. Everything from the crust to the flavours, perfection. It was perfectly balanced in terms of crunch and chewiness. I don’t know how he does it, but no pizza will ever taste the same for me. Every dish that was served was perfectly made, it really builds up your excitement to the finale “the pizza” and it never disappoints. Thank you Chef and the team for such a lovely experience, I can’t wait to be back. I brought my family with me and they also loved the experience, my daughter whose 5 never eats more than 1 slice of pizza, and she had at least 5 today! By the time we left, she told me she wants now to be a Chef! That is amazing!”

“This is my favorite ramen among the so-called Tanrei-kei. Soy sauce, shio, both noodles and soup are delicious. I eat 3-5 bowls of ramen almost every week, and whenever people ask me about delicious ramen, I always recommend this place. I sincerely hope that it will reopen.”

“Manboyaki (Udon Noodles) highball It seemed like this place originally had a wait, but we were lucky enough to get in without a wait around 6:30. The English menu was well written, so ordering was easy. I got my drink first and waited for the food to come out, but it took about 30 to 40 minutes for the food to come out. This seems to be because while part-timers also help with other side dishes, the master cooks okonomiyaki. The taste was good and the quantity was small. I chose udon noodles because there were reviews saying that soba noodles would be salty, and it was good. However, the big drawback is that it takes too long for the food to come out... Not recommended if you have upcoming plans such as light-up.”

“A modern cafe in a renovated 120-year-old Kyoto townhouse located in a quiet alley just off the hustle and bustle of Gion. You can visit before 18:00 and after 18:00, there are cocktails on a different menu, and the interior of the store has indirect lighting and comfortable sofas, so you can relax in an ennui adult atmosphere. I ordered a menu that comes with 5 types of tea (matcha, sencha, hojicha, Japanese oolong tea, and Japanese black tea) and bite-size sweets that match each of them. The different flavors of tea, the different tastes of sweets, etc. are very fun, and will tickle the hearts of women who want to enjoy a little bit of a lot of variety, and make them feel rich. This is a shop that I would like people who enjoy tea quietly to visit.”

“Ate here on the 29th, and enjoyed the experience immensely.. We did 2 set meals plus other dishes (kimchi, shiitaki 🍄, and other meats).. Meat 🐂🐖 was of good quality and what i thought as resonable pricing as compared to other dining experiences. The staff was awesome very attentive and friendly.. making suggestions and showing their "know how" on meat prep. Would highly recommend this place. Look forward to trying again in the future and would recommend to my American, Korean, and Japanes friends. Wish I had more photos of the food as presented, but it was so good...we sometimes got ahead of ourselves before taking a pic”

“I guess I just made a wrong choice. This vintage Japanese restaurant is famous for "sara-mori" which is a pork cutlet over rice with thick sauce. More than half of customers seemed to have ordered this one. I had a regular chicken udon which was quite ordinary (I mean I could make something like this at home) and nothing to write home about. Service was busy, with lots of pressure for prompt order, and not exactly friendly.”
