“We were visiting Nikko as a day trip on a whim, and saw this place on Maps and decided to check it out. They're usually reservation-only for dinner, but they were able to let some people in since it's the off-season. Very lucky; otherwise we wouldn't have gotten to try it! I had a chat with the lady at the counter. Her English was fine but a bit stilted; we conversed in Japanese to make it quicker. They source their fish from Tsukiji in Tokyo, getting it brought in twice a day. Basically, great value for amazing food all the way up here in the mountains. They will do some things off-menu, too. You can get tea served hot, they'll offer to switch out some of the types of fish if you prefer, etc. Since they were not crowded, the staff was way more engaging than expected. It's more than just the food quality that makes this place awesome. Would highly recommend, but don't be like us and try to walk in without reserving for dinner - it's apparently very rare for them to be able to accept people without reservations!”

“A really popular Sano ramen restaurant in this area. You need to fill the order slip first and then submit it over the counter seat. You must get a number card instead. There usually is a queue here so you have to wait for a while and will be called by number. Everything is good here, but particularly I love Age-gyoza. A large yellow signboard is a landmark for this restaurant.”

“I used to go there a lot before the renovation, but this was my first time since the renovation. The food was delicious before, but now it's even better, the store is cleaner, and there are more box seats, so I was very impressed. Even if I ask for something that isn't on the menu, they will accommodate my request and I am very satisfied.”

“Tucked away from the main attention grabber of the area, this coffee shop is located in the "upper area" of Nikko in among local residences and shops. The menu does not have English, but do not let this or other local establishments sway otherwise as with just trying, the staff are very accommodating. First, the shaved ice, this is how it should be done. Not crushed, but shaved almost into strands. They have an amazing almost toasted flavored honey shaved ice. Secondly, the coffee is amazing and almost...chocolate like in its creaminess and grounded flavor. Have it black, or try a latte, this is a gem and a treat!”

“Great Tonkotsu ramen. The place got quite busy around lunch time so I suggest going a bit early. Also had the gyoza which was pretty good. Small but nice. My mother-in-law go the tsukemen which looked good and she enjoyed it. The noodles for the tsukemen are a bit thicker. For the tonkotsu ramen (and probably others) you can choose between different thicknesses for the noodles. I chose thinnest and was quite content.”

“Sunday is the day of the ox. I called on Friday to try and get some eel from my favorite eel restaurant, but they said it was full on Saturday and Sunday. I got takeout on Monday, a day late! I got excited and had a family portion of eel on top. Very satisfied with the soft, fluffy and crunchy taste. It also came with pickles and soup, making it a luxurious dinner!”

“It's a long-established restaurant known for its sweetly cooked fried rice and strong vinegared rice, so I had a friend who's been a fan take me there for a long time. Nowadays, most of the flavors are a little less sweet, but this one is really sweet! ︎ The fried rice has a characteristic feel, and I wonder why it's not moist lol, but it's delicious. I had one as a dessert after dinner.”
