“It’s quite an adventure to hike up there! It’s a good hike for beginners, the hike is definitely not easy but manageable with snow shoes! You have to wear snow shoes! The Bergl Alm itself is very cozy and offers good warming food, which you’ll need before you hike back!”

“Breathtakingly unwelcoming and unfriendly reception. This was the worst refuge I have encountered in three months of hiking through Slovenia, Austria and Italy. The manager appears to think he is running a five star hotel in the centre of Milan, not an Alpine Club refuge in the mountains. It was so awful that despite being tired after a hard day and having just fallen and hurt my hand, I opted to continue walking rather than stay at this dreadful place. Not a recommended stop on the E5. Edit: Firstly, I was not there on Sunday, it was a Friday and the place was almost empty. At most 10 other people. Secondly, I was not ordering food, I wished to stay at the refuge. Thirdly, my German is poor, but I was doing my best to use it. The manger refused to speak slowly so I could understand, despite REPEATED requests to do so. In the end, a young staff member had to translate his impatient, very fast speech for me. I am an Alpine Club member, however when I produced my membership card, he treated me as if I was trying to defraud him, despite the card clearly showing the reciprocal membership rights symbol. The card is accepted throughout Europe, including in multiple other Italian Alpine Club refuges. It is fortunate that after three months of continuous hiking in the mountains, I am extremely fit and strong and I was able to continue, with a 20kg pack and walk for 9.5 hours in order to find somewhere more welcoming to stay. It is an indication of how bad my reception was at this hut, that this was preferable.”

Thomas went out of his way to not only story tell about the place and its history ( which is incredible ) but arranged for a chef to make us some food outside of kitchen hours ( I was starving !) which was some of the best local cuisine ever tried. Can't wait to be back there again. 🙌”

“I spent 2 nights in this beautiful place. The apartment is really nice, welcoming and clean. There is everything you need available. The balcony on the valley side is fantastic. We had dinner in the restaurant. Excellent and well presented dishes. The dining room staff is really very kind and helpful. I hope to return to this beautiful place!☺️”

When I asked where he wanted to eat, he answered, a bit wistfully, “Somewhere that speaks of südtirol, I have lost touch with. Zum löwen a restaurant that truly speaks of the place südtirol . This restaurant would not be in the thick of it all. It would be hushed, sheltered, exclusive, admitting no more than a handful of people at a time nice cozy great for a romantic&business &Family dinning. Running by family business, daughter 💙father serve you with southyrol hospitality, an international flair. Anna is the wife of Luis , at the same time the chef ,she has a natural skills for cooking love it. Quality excellent- wine list unthinkable.... international & locals wine . Wine pairing with the menu my favor part. Highly recommended this place at anytime make sure you call ahead .”

“It started well… we’ve been here 3 years ago and had an amazing experience so booked the hotel and reserved a table here. Starters and service were good and since we love good food (and are willing to pay for it) we went for the steak for 2 which comes at 85(!!) euros … starters came and we were happy to see the quality was still good ! Then the main course came and everything fell apart .. the medium rare request turned up after way too much time in the blistering heat and every single taste was cooked, baked and seared out of the meat … what a waste of good food and our appetite .. when we mentioned this to the waitress she was very apologetic and friendly, she was happy we mentioned it and would go to the kitchen to tell the chef .. after coming back with replacement options (we declined since we lost our appetites) she remained friendly and very kind. Wasn’t her fault and the fact she owned up to it was good to see. Not so good to see was the manager and the chef who didn’t feel that serving a wel done piece of meat was worth an apologie or even a word .. very disappointing to see that owning a mistake is left to the friendly staff while the responsible people stay hidden in their kitchen and walking around being busy … the solution by the way was 50% discount on the “50% extra cooking time” steak .. not impressed but that was the solution they felt was the best, next time, come to the table and own your mistakes like managers / responsible people do, we all make mistakes, it’s how we deal with them that defines you as a person, hiding is NEVER an option.”
