“For some reason, I expected Mister Mao’s to be a typical dimsum restaurant, but it was a bit different than that. We ordered a bunch of small plates - kashmiri fried chicken, crispy pork belly, smoked lamb belly, gulf shrimp dumplings, garlic noodles and pork lumpia. They didn’t have crab for the noodles, probably not worth getting without it. The pork belly and smoked lamb tasted good on the first bite and kinda went downhill after that. The pork lumpia was really good and so were the dumplings. Overall, nice place and decent food, service was quick and we got a seat at the “chef’s counter” - however, it wasn’t anything special.”

“I’ve always enjoyed their quesadillas. They are very good. However, the service I received today was subpar. I ordered a quesadilla, a large queso, and asked for an additional bag of chips. Chips and salsa are complementary to any order. I often order an extra bag of chips, so that will have enough, which I’m normally charged about $1.50. The waitress charged me five dollars for an extra chips and salsa. I tried to explain that I just wanted an extra bag of chips and not an extra salsa. We went back-and-forth for four or five minutes with her refusing to just charge me for a bag of chips, claiming that that is not possible, even though I do it all of the time. She finally went to the back, and another lady came up and brought me a second bag of chips for a dollar. In addition, when I left the restaurant, my large queso ($10) was a tiny cup that was only half full (pictured below). Also, my quesadilla was chicken and steak instead of the steak and shrimp that I ordered. Service definitely needs some improvement.”

“I had to wait to get the order I had placed because a worker did not come in. The manager was very apologetic. The Hot tamales were a little bit spicy for me but not too much. I made a hot tamale casserole with them that turned out very well. In my opinion, they are definitely worth the price. I certainly would buy them again.”

Staff and owners go out of their way make you feel welcome. We find ourselves at their daily happy hour often… featuring food & drink specials. Don’t miss their frozen and blended margaritas! Excellent mezcal selection too. Fantastic atmosphere with outdoor seating surrounded by tropical plants and a chic indoor bar seating area set inside an art deco former service station right on hip St Claude Avenue. Truly a slice of authentic Mexico right here in Nola!”
