“It was built as a debt of gratitude for the liberation from the plague epidemic that scypped Venice during 1575-1576. During this epidemic period, more than 46,000 people, equivalent to 25-30 percent of the population, died. The Senate commissioned the great architect Andrea Palladio to design the church. Church Of San Stae
4.5
( 8 reviews )

Salizada San Stae, 1982, 30135 Venezia VE, Italy

“This Baroque church is dedicated to Eustace who according to legend lived in the 2nd century and refused to worship pagan gods. Convicted to be burnt alive inside a brazen bull (a torture device: a convict would be placed inside a metall bull held above a fire untill steamed to death). A rather bloody story, but very popular during the late Middle Ages when this 11th century church was founded. The spectacular Baroque facade facing the Grand Canal dates from 1709. Not only the outside, but the interior as well is richly decorated with sculptures. The craftmanship with which they were made is outstanding. I found the painting work by leading artists from the early 1700s less appealing than the three-dimensional sculptures.”
