The omakase is not just a meal; it's an authentic experience, especially if you're fortunate enough to secure counter seating. Hiro, Melbourne's first qualified sushi chef, crafts each piece with a skill honed over two decades. His wife, Susi, complements his talents seamlessly, both of them being Glen Waverley staples for over 20 years. While the drink and menu options might be somewhat limited, the quality of what's offered more than compensates. You're even welcome BYO wine, a nice touch that contributes to the overall value. Speaking of which, for the sheer quality and experience, Shira Nui offers the most budget-friendly omakase in Melbourne. If you're contemplating a visit, my advice is this: book in advance and request a seat at the counter to witness the culinary ballet that is Hiro's sushi preparation. “We had a great meal the Caledonian Inn. Sat in the restaurant, but the food was the same in the bar and came from same kitchen so that would not have changed. We had the seafood platter. Oyster's, scallops, prawns, 2 types of fish (the battered flake was unbelievably good), calamari. We also chose to add a half crayfish to it which was wonderful. It was all so fresh, tasty and plenty of it. We were pushed to get through it all. Service by the team was friendly and efficient. Would certainly recommend and glad we went.”

I actually gave a $20 tip, and l rarely tip. Young girl was happy, smiling, and helpful. The older guy was funny and had great stories. Their involvement really made the night enjoyable. It's environment is only lacking a premium feel which is not a deal breaker and somewhat common in these kind of restaurants. They only allow BYO alcohol, they do not carry any alcohol. You can get some next door and bring it in. The senior waiters seem to be able to speak multiple Asian languages, mainly Chinese and Vietnamese.”

The place was a bit busy because of the holiday season, but the staffs are still able to manage and take care of the customers. And all the dishes came from the kitchen within 20 minutes. The NZ Snapper we ordered to share on that day has more tiny bones than we expected, however it was a whole fish not a fillet, we could understand. But just be extra careful when you have it. The chilly sauce is mild so don’t worry, it provides some layers of the dish and the fish was fresh. The kingfish starter was okay, but maybe if you have a chance, you can try their seafood platters instead. Since we have a small appetite and don’t want to waste the food, so we didn’t get one of those platters to try. The pomegranate cocktail tastes good! Recommended. Their drink menu is also very interesting to try :)”
